Social Determinants of health
SOCIAL RISK IS A SIGNIFICANT PREDICTOR OF ADVERSE PREGNANCY AND BIRTH OUTCOMES. SCREENING FOR SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH DURING PRENATAL CARE CAN IDENTIFY AT-RISK PATIENTS EARLY IN THEIR PREGNANCIES AND PREVENT ADVERSE OUTCOMES.
Project 1: Implementing universal social risk screening in prenatal care
In 2020, Dartmouth Health began integrating social determinants of health screening and referral for all prenatal care patients at their four OB clinics in New Hampshire. We are studying the uptake and effectiveness of this intervention.
Listen to our lead partner, Dr. Daisy Goodman, Vice Chair of Research for OB-Gyn at Dartmouth Heath and social justice visionary, talk about the importance of this project in improving maternal health equity for patients
Project 2: SYNERGY
A team of Dartmouth Health (DH) and Dartmouth College researchers, including Drs. Alka Dev, Daisy Goodman, and Wesley Marrero, are working to develop and validate social risk scoring for adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes in a prenatal care population using fair machine learning. This will serve as a measure of complex social risk that could help triage high risk patients early in pregnancy.
